Boat Transport Reviews: What Boat Owners Say About Their Haulers

Boat owners on CitizenShipper care most about two things: hearing from their hauler and getting the boat there on time. Haulers move powerboats, fishing boats, pontoons, and sailboats, from short local tows to multi-day, cross-country hauls. Below are the most recent boat transport reviews, unfiltered, each with the hauler, the route, and the owner's rating.

David provided responsible delivery service to us. Even his truck broke down prior to pick-up date, he managed to re-arrange our boat delivery using different vehicle and made it happen this way. So, good overall rating. Another general comment on CitizenShipper experience: The site operates well, but I wish the company would announce their stand-alone fee ahead of time. In my case, this fee was a significant 20% on top of negotiated delivery price and it was pronounced only after the delivery was set-up and deposit paid.

Shipment from Sacramento, CA to Wasilla, AK

Sacramento, CA → Wasilla, AK

Short story. Shipping to Alaska? Don’t use this company. Synopsis: horrible communication, did not even come close to meeting deadline, unprepared at border, caught repeatedly lying about shipment details, still charged full price for a partial trip despite his total incompetence. Long story: boat was quoted to be delivered by the second week of April. Boat was picked up March 17th with Brandon stating “I’ll watch the weather and bring it up between storms”. Okay, fair enough. After no updates from Brandon in approximately a week, I message him to let him know I’d be out of town April 10-14th and further collaboration would be through my wife. At this time he tells me his daughter has “a doctor’s appointment” and the boat wouldn’t be delivered until the 27th (two weeks past quoted time frame). At his mercy, I agreed. Finally, Brandon takes off for Alaska April 23rd with the preface that “if I run into any trouble at the border I’ll call you”. The next morning, I receive a call from Brandon stating, “hey, I was turned down at the border and they wouldn’t tell me the reason, pretty sure they just didn’t like me”. At this time I asked to talk to the border patrol to which Brandon stated, “I’m all ready an hour away from the border. The agent said you’ll either have to come across with me or hire a different company” (come to find out Brandon had let the bonding expire on the boat and failed to check it prior to embarking). As such, Brandon said he would once again work on getting bonding only two days later to state that bonding had been denied “without reason”. I asked Brandon repeatedly for the paperwork to figure out the reason for denial in case I needed to get a different company to transport, of which he repeatedly skirted providing. After 2 more days of deliberation, a good friend noted that he would pick the boat up and bring it back. After the boat was picked up, Brandon proceeded to charge me 2.44$/mile to drag the boat from Sacramento the Washington without any prior discussion stating, “this is what I have into it driving to the border and I’ll absorb the rest of the costs” (storage. As if somehow him procrastinating for 6 weeks to transport my shipment was my fault). Now, I missed a literal once in a lifetime hunt (boat was being used as transport for trip), out 40hours of PTO, thousands of dollars in supplies for said trip, and hundreds of dollars in flights/accommodations preparing for trip. Retrospect: I chose Brandon as he was fairly Priced, initially had good communication, had great reviews, and was a small, family business. After this experience, I’m not sure he should be allowed to stay on this platform.

Boat transport questions

What do boat owners say in CitizenShipper reviews?

Of the 500 most recent boat transport reviews, published from June 2023 to September 2026, 94% are five stars, 50% praise communication, and 23% mention on-time or early pickup or delivery. Owners mention details like extra strapping, updates at every state line, and haulers who fixed trailer lights before the trip.

What types of boats do CitizenShipper haulers move?

Powerboats are the most common, followed by fishing boats and sailboats. Haulers also move pontoons, personal watercraft, and other vessels. List the boat's length, beam, and weight, and whether it sits on its own trailer, so haulers can tell you if their equipment fits.

Do I need my own trailer to ship a boat?

No. If your boat sits on a road-ready trailer, a hauler can often tow it on that trailer. If it doesn't, look for a hauler with their own boat trailer or flatbed, and say which you need in your listing. If your trailer is being towed, check the lights, tires, and bearings before pickup.

How are boat haulers on CitizenShipper checked?

Haulers are independent contractors screened through Checkr for felonies and DUIs, among other criteria. Their profiles show reviews from past customers and whether their USDOT number, identity, and insurance have been verified. For a high-value boat, ask the hauler to confirm their insurance coverage in writing before you book.

Should I pay a boat hauler a deposit?

Only in a way you can reverse. Haulers often ask for part of the quote at pickup to cover fuel and equipment. Pay it with a credit card, PayPal, Apple Pay, or another method that lets you dispute a charge, never by wire transfer, Western Union, or MoneyGram, and put the price, deposit, and balance in CitizenShipper messages first. The boat booking fee you pay CitizenShipper at checkout is based on the hauler's quote and is separate from it. See how payments work on CitizenShipper.
