Dog Shipping Cost Calculator

Explore dog transport rates using dogs-only marketplace data. Enter your route for a driving-distance-based total price range and cost per mile. Ideal for relocations, adoptions, or breeder-to-owner transport.

How the dog shipping cost calculator works

  1. Enter your route. Add the pickup and delivery locations as a city and state or a ZIP code.
  2. See your estimate. When it can calculate a driving route, the calculator shows its distance, a cost-per-mile range, and low, typical, and high total prices.
  3. Get real quotes. Open a CitizenShipper shipment with your route already filled in, finish the listing, and dog transporters can start sending you quotes.

The calculator is free and you don't need an account to use it.

How we calculate dog shipping costs

The figures on this page are based on dog shipments booked on the CitizenShipper marketplace from July 2025 through June 2026. The source prices are booked transporter fees, not asking prices or unaccepted quotes.

  • Cost per mile. We divide each fee by the route's driving distance and take the median for every route in every quarter. Each route's median counts once for every booking behind it, so busier routes carry more weight. The typical rate is the median of those figures, the usual range runs from the 25th to the 75th percentile, and the high-end rate is the 90th percentile.
  • Your estimate. The calculator looks for the closest match with enough bookings behind it: your city pair (in either direction), then your state pair, then the whole marketplace. Routes below the minimum booking count for a match fall back to a broader rate. The calculator normally requests these route rates from the same cost feed and may include newer bookings. If the live feed is unavailable, it uses a historical marketplace rate. It needs a Google Maps driving distance to multiply the rate range into a total estimate.
  • What's left out. Cats and other pets, and bookings without a usable fee or driving distance. Most dog shipments on CitizenShipper travel by road; the data doesn't separate out the ones flown with a pet nanny.

The calculator gives an estimated market range, not a guaranteed quote. Your actual price comes from the quotes transporters send you, and depends on the factors below.

What affects the cost of shipping a dog?

The calculator prices your trip by distance and route. Transporters also weigh the rest of these when they quote, so your final price can land above or below the estimate.

  • Distance. The biggest driver of your total. Your price grows with the miles driven.
  • Pickup and delivery locations. Rates vary from route to route, which is why the calculator looks for your exact city pair first.
  • Dog size and weight. A bigger dog takes up more room in the vehicle and may need a larger crate.
  • Shared or private transport. A direct, private trip usually costs more than sharing the ride with other pets.
  • Timing and urgency. Fixed or last-minute dates leave fewer transporters able to take the trip. Flexible dates bring more quotes to compare.
  • Transporter availability. The more transporters driving near your route, the more quotes you're likely to get.
  • Special handling. Medication, extra stops, or a dog that needs extra care can add to the price.
  • Seasonal demand. Busy travel periods can mean fewer open spots and higher quotes.
