There are many different ways you can organize your maintenance checklist:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>One option is to print out the checklist, make a copy for each month and physically check off each task as it\u2019s complete.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Buy a physical calendar and mark the date each task needs to be completed.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>If you\u2019re more tech-savvy, you can use a Google or Outlook calendar to manage your tasks.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 id=\"h-tire-pressure\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tire Pressure<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not only is having the correct tire pressure level important for maintaining your motorcycle and getting good gas mileage, but it\u2019s also a safety concern. Tires with the wrong tire pressure can lead to adverse motorcycle handling or, at worst, tire failure.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most motorcycle manufacturers recommend you <a href=\"https:\/\/one.nhtsa.gov\/people\/injury\/pedbimot\/motorcycle\/psimotorcycle\/pages\/McycleTireSafTips.htm#:~:text=Check%20your%20tire%20pressure%20often,you%20take%20your%20bike%20out.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">check the tire pressure once a week<\/a> \u2014 but others recommend giving the tires a quick inspection each time you go for a ride.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Checking tire pressure is easy:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Check the manufacturer\u2019s recommended tire pressure.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Unscrew the tire valve covers.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Use a tire pressure gauge to measure the PSI (pounds per square inch).<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>If the tire pressure is too high, use the backside of the gauge to release some air.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>If the pressure is too low, you\u2019ll need to add air.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you own an air compressor, turn it on and fill up those tires. Unfortunately, most people don\u2019t have their own compressors. Without proper oil, components in the engine may overheat due to excess friction. Oil also cools and lubricates the gearbox and clutch. In other words, engine oil is extremely important!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the past, you\u2019d check the bike engine oil levels just like you would with a car \u2014 using a dipstick. However, modern motorcycles have a glass or plastic viewing window at the bottom of the engine.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The viewing makes it easier to check the oil and avoids the need to make a mess with rags to wipe off the dipstick each time you check the oil level.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>The top line on the viewing window means full.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>The lower line on the viewing window means \u201cadd oil.\u201d<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Make sure the oil levels fall between the two lines.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Some manufacturers recommend keeping the oil levels near the top line; others recommend it stays a little lower, halfway between the two lines.<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>If the oil is black or dark brown, it\u2019s time for an oil change.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No matter what, make sure you follow the manufacturer\u2019s recommendations for oil changes \u2014 they\u2019re typically advised to change oil at 3,700 miles. But bikes with a chain can get loose over miles and miles of use. Your street bike chain shouldn\u2019t sag more than 40mm; that metric is 50mm for dirt bikes.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Experts recommend checking the chain slack every 500 miles or every 2-3 times you refuel \u2014 whichever comes first. While brake pad failure is unlikely, even worn-down pads can be dangerous.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before you worry about the pads themselves, remember to stay on top of replacing brake fluid. Brake fluid takes on moisture, diluting its efficiency. It\u2019s recommended that you replace the fluid every year or two for maximum performance.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, on to the pads themselves. While you should replace thinning brake pads to maintain standard braking performance, the biggest issue is preventing damage to the brake disc.
